Tampa’s Cutest Business Success Story Starts with USF Credit Union
At USF Credit Union, we’re committed to helping Tampa Bay businesses bank better. And you bet, our support doesn’t stop at the signature line for local entrepreneurs like Marissa Finney.
Marissa walked into one of our branches with a dream of opening her own dog grooming salon- and walked out with a plan to make it real.
Today, her thriving business, Ava's Dog Salon, has become a trusted grooming destination across Tampa Bay, serving 20 to 30 dogs a day and welcoming new clients every month.
From USF Alumni to Entrepreneur
Born and raised in Wesley Chapel, Marissa graduated from the University of South Florida. As a student, she opened her personal checking and savings accounts with USF CU.
But when she decided to open her own dog grooming salon, she needed more than a checking account. She needed guidance.
“When I decided to open my business, I went into my local branch and spoke to a banker,” she says. “We sat down and discussed options - different loans, credit cards, any way I could finance my business.”
Like many first-time entrepreneurs, Marissa didn’t know the process of securing funding or forming an LLC. What she found wasn’t just financing - it was partnership.
Turning Passion Into a Plan
Together, Marissa and USF CU explored the best path forward. A personal loan provided the capital she needed to lease space, purchase grooming tables and equipment, and prepare for opening day.
Soon after, she established her business checking account to manage daily operations and future growth.
“They helped me a lot with advice on how to get the LLC and where to go on the website,” she shares. “They were very knowledgeable.”
Five years later, Ava’s Dog Salon continues to grow- powered by word-of-mouth, loyal customers, and a community that shows up.
The salon grooms all breeds and ages, offering baths, full-body haircuts, and mini-grooms.
Goldendoodles are among the most common clients, and on any given day, 20 to 30 dogs come through the doors.
From day one, they’ve had customers- and they’re still welcoming new ones every day.
A Long-Term Relationship
Marissa’s relationship with USF CU didn’t stop once her doors opened.
“I’ve done a personal car loan with (USF CU),” she says. “Every time I walk in, everyone is very kind and very helpful. I’ve been a member for years.”
That continuity- from student banking to business lending to auto loans- reflects what Better Business Banking for All means in action.
Marissa’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs?
“If you have a passion, just do it. I know it seems scary, but it all works out if you have a good community and have good support.”
